Some Observations on the Jejunum of the Vagotomized Rabbit

Abstract
This study is designed to detect the tendency of the surface coat of the mucous membrane, and the columnar and goblet cells in the villous epithelium and Lieberkuhn¢¥s crypt of the jejunum for various, experimental periods after vagotomy. Specimens were stained with H-E and PAS techniques for the light microscopic observations.
Results obtained -were summerized as follows
1. Nuclei of the columnar cells in the villous epithelium and Lieberkiihn¢¥s. cryptt appear to be hypochromatic in the 2 days group, although they don¢¥t show¢¥ any changes :. in the other vagotomized groups.
2. Columnar and goblet cells in the villous epithelium and Lieberkiihn¢¥s crypt ,degrease in number in the 2 days group in comparison with those in 4, 8 and 16 days groups, which show gradual. increase.
3. Columnar cells in villous epithelium and Lieberkuhn¢¥s crypt in the vagotomized groups, show PAS negative reactions as seen in the normal group.
4. Surface coats of the mucous membrane appear to be thickened and show strong PAS reactions in the vagotomized groups.
5. Most of the goblet cells in the villous epithelium and Lieberkiihn¢¥s crypt of the vagotomized groups show strong PAS reactions regardless of their changes in number.
From these results it is assumed that the proliferation of the columnar and goblet cells in the Lieberkiihn¢¥s crypt is ceased or decreased temporally in the early days after vagotomy, even though their migrations are continued. The thickening of the surface coat seems to be formed by the secretion of goblet cells to protect the mucosa from the semisolid contents, which are filled in the lumen of the jejunum.
